exactly right..

As I see it, when you want to be a "user", VCC has the edge. It's dedicated to doing one thing: Being a CoCo. It's interface is simpler to use so you can just start doing CoCo stuff without any hassles.

When you want to be a programmer, MESS is the way to go. MESS has an awesome debugger/memory inspector.. makes an incredibly handy tool for programming. You can open windows to memory ranges and watch the bytes change (or set them yourself). Really great. Also, MESS is open source which means you can see how it works and change it yourself if you want to.

Both are good to have around and they share disk images, etc. No reason anyone has to use one exclusively.

Which reminds me, I need to resurrect the computer that has the MESS code to emulate the speech and sound pak. Tim Lindner sent me his code and I integrated it with a newer version of MESS.
Due to an issue with the MESS emulation of the SSP's processor it didn't work right, but maybe that as been fixed.

That would be awesome, I hope they emulate it for VCC too.

You might want to contact Joseph and ask him if it's on his list. If enough people inquire about it, he might. It would be nice also if he open sourced it or at least let a few other coder modify the source code to add features...

Post Re: Vcc CoCo Emulator
Hi,

I have hit a dead end of finding how to boot the Nitros-9 HDD.

I got at far as DIR 255 giving me a file listing as well as DIR 254 and DIR 253.

But DOS 255 just says "OK" which is not OK.

"Robert Gault's CoCo page"
http://home.att.net/~robert.gault/Coco/CoCo_main.htm

Will not load.

Help please, I want to extract some files from one of my OS-9 L-II boot disks.

When AT&T stopped giving their customers free website, Aaron offered to host Robert's website.

You can find it here.

Post Booting NitrOS-9 on Vcc CoCo Emulator
Hi,

Here are the instructions as to how to boot NitrOS-9 on VCC from Bob Devries.

I might as well set the record straight. While there may be some strange key
combos in VCC, RGDBDOS incorporates "FlexiKey" by Colin J. Stearman (c) 1984.

FlexiKey has the following unusual functions.
1) Once a command line has been entered, it can be recalled character by
character with the right arrow.
2) Once a command line has been entered, it can be completely recalled with
Shift Right Arrow.

Recalled characters will acts as normal on ENTER.

3) Recalled characters may be edited before execution with ENTER.
3a) Shift Up Arrow - starts insertion.
3b) Down Arrow - deletes the next character.
3c) Right Arrow - recalls a single character after editing is finished.
3d) Shift Right Arrow - recalls the rest of the line after editing is finished.
4) Shift Down Arrow - returns to the beginning of the line for further editing
without execution with ENTER.
5) Shift Clear - turns off FlexiKey so that special characters normally printed
with the arrow keys will work. FlexiKey will automatically restart after the
'special' key has been entered.

6) FlexiKey does not function when the Basic line editor is in use. The buffer
can hold 250 characters.

============
The above explains why VCC with RGBDOS active prints \ after a Shift Home Shift
Home. VCC uses Home for the Clear key and with DOS1.0 or DOS1.1, the Shift Clear
combo prints \ .
There are other 'useful' VCC keys with FlexiKey turned off or RGBDOS deselected.

combo printed
shift up left arrow
shift right ]
shift down [
[ and ] actually work
